Soprano Chen Reiss soloist, BNY Mellon Grand Classics’ program also features Dvořák’s ‘Biblical Songs’

PITTSBURGH – Music Director Manfred Honeck joins forces with baritone star Thomas Hampson as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) presents Brahms’ A German Requiem, and Dvořák’s Biblical Songs, a song cycle based on various psalms, at Heinz Hall.

Hampson, who last appeared at Heinz Hall in October 2003, joins the all-star cast of angelic soprano Chen Reiss, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, under the direction of Betsy Burleigh, and the PSO in Brahms’ A German Requiem. Sung in German for dramatic effect, this entrancing and magnanimous work takes the audience from tender and quiet moments of sweetness to powerful peaks of emotional intensity.

Thomas Hampson enjoys a singular international career as a recitalist, opera singer, and recording artist. The American baritone has performed in all of the world’s most important concert halls and opera houses with many renowned singers, pianists, conductors, and orchestras. His discography of more than 150 albums includes winners of a Grammy Award, five Edison Prizes, the Grand Prix du Disque, and most recently the 2011 “Singer of the Year” ECHO Prize. Hampson begins his 2011-12 season at San Francisco Opera, where he will create the role of Rick Rescorla in the world premiere of Christopher Theofanidis’s Heart of a Soldier, commemorating the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks

Chen Reiss, who last appeared at Heinz Hall in December 2009, has performed leading parts at the Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Théâtre des Champs- Élysées, Teatro alla Scala, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Wiener Festwochen, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Israeli Opera. On her new solo album, LIAISONS, which recently won the Diapason D’or, she sings arias by Mozart, Haydn, Cimarosa and Salieri, accompanied by baroque ensemble L’arte del mondo.
