MARVIN HAMLISCH LEADS PSO IN SPECTACULAR ‘BALLROOM WITH A TWIST’ CONCERT

Features stars from ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ ‘American Idol,’ ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

 PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Principal Pops Conductor Marvin Hamlisch will lead the PSO in exciting PNC Pops concerts showcasing stars from hit TV shows such as Dancing with the Stars, American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance.

“Ballroom with a Twist“ will be at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15, and 2:30 p.m. at Heinz Hall. Tickets, ranging from $20 to $95, can be purchased by calling the Heinz Hall box office at 412.392.4900, or online at www.pittsburghsymphony.org.

The concert will feature a dazzling array of more than a dozen dancers choreographed by Emmy-nominated Louis van Amstel from the hit TV show, Dancing with the Stars. Leading them will be will be Edyta Sliwinska, the only professional dancer to appear on all 10 seasons of Dancing with the Stars. Other performers include American Idol finalists Gina Glocksen, David Hernandez, LaKisha Jones and Von smith, as well as top performers from other reality-TV shows. The concert will include breathtaking costumes, incredible vocalists, electrifying dance performances and spectacular music by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Steve Perry, George and Ira Gershwin, Tito Puente and many others.

Marvin Hamlisch’s life in music is notable for its great versatility and substance. As composer, Hamlisch has won virtually every major award: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards; his groundbreaking show, A Chorus Line, received the Pulitzer Prize.  He is the composer of more than 40 motion picture scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, for which he received his third Oscar. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and musical adaptations for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, Bananas and Save the Tiger.

Edyta Sliwinska started to dance when she was 10. Edyta became a successful ballroom dancer in Poland and achieved a world-class status representing Poland on International competitions all over the world. She moved to the US in 2000 to pursue her dance career, after she met Alec Mazo at the ballroom dance competition in Blackpool, England. Edyta and Alec became a successful partnership ever since. They were four times US finalists and represented America on many international championships. In 2005, she appeared on the first season of Dancing With The Stars and has partnered on the show with Evander Holyfield, George Hamilton, Ashley Hamilton, Aiden Turner, Joey Lawrence, John Ratzenberger, Cameron Mathison, Jason Taylor, Jeffrey Ross and Lawrence Taylor.
