The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra continues its celebration of the 10th anniversary of performances at the Scottish Rite Cathedral with a special seasonal tradition: a concert of favorite carols and holiday music.

The Holiday Pops! Concert, at which Santa Claus will make an appearance, will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec.10 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle. The Orchestra will be led by guest conductor Lucas Richman and the concert will feature soloists, soprano Katy Williams and PSO violinist Shanshan Yao.

Tickets also will be sold at the PSO‘s portable box office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3 at the Eat-n-Park restaurant, 100 West Washington St., New Castle.

The program for this popular concert will include “Hallelujah” from Handel’s Messiah, holiday favorites such as O Holy Night, A Holly Jolly Christmas, Sleigh Ride, Hanukkah Festival Overture, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and The Santa Clause Suite, and a sing-along of carols.

Lucas Richman has served as Music Director for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra since 2003 and, beginning with the 2010-2011 season, will also serve as Music Director and Conductor for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. Richman has appeared as guest conductor with numerous orchestras and his command of the core repertoire, coupled with his finesse in presenting new and contemporary works, continues to illustrate Richman as a source of musical expertise and artistic excellence.

Katy Williams has performed extensively in the Pittsburgh area with organizations such as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Opera, Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Opera Theater, River City Brass Band and Pittsburgh Concert Chorale. She was a featured soloist for several Pittsburgh Symphony Holiday Pops concert series and made her PSO classical debut in September 2005 with Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

As a soloist, Chinese violinist Shanshan Yao has performed with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Calgary Civic Symphony, Banff Centre Chamber Orchestra and Japan’s Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra. The recipient of numerous awards and prizes, Yao made her orchestra debut at the age of 12 with Shanghai Radio Symphony Orchestra. Her debut recital at the National Arts Centre in Canada took place in 2009. She also was invited to appear in a special performance for the former Secretary of State Colin Powell at the Eisenhower Fellowships Conference in Philadelphia.
