Manfred Honeck was appointed the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s ninth music director in January 2007, and launched his tenure at the start of the 2008-09 season conducting Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. This performance, which was called "electric and provoking," was recorded and released on the Exton label.

As the City’s primary ambassador since 1900, the Orchestra lays claim to 34 international tours, including 18 European tours, eight trips to the Far East and two to South America. In 2004, the PSO became the first American orchestra to perform at the Vatican.

Manfred Honeck, Music Director of the PSO since 2008, also holds the title of Principal Guest Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra since 2008. Prior to these appointments, his posts included Music Director the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart, among others. An accomplished violinist and violist, Mr. Honeck spent more than 10 years as a member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra.

Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has been one of the most acclaimed violin virtuosos of our time for over three decades. Her international career has taken her to all of the major music centers of Europe, North and South America and Asia. Her repertoire has been noted for being expansive, in both the established and new realms. Her extensive discography is on the Deutsche Grammophon label.
