Principal Hornist, Steve Kostyniak played in the section since he won
He played 5th horn in the piece. We had a stupendously strong section
for the performance: Bill, Zach assisting, me, Ron, Joe, Steve K., Liz
Friemuth (new Principal Hornist for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra),
Dave Marlow, and Ken Pope. The performance circumstances weren’t

Steve Kostyniak comes to us from the Utah Symphony where he held the
same position (associate principal horn). I have an old school buddy
in the section in Utah and he’s really depressed that we’ve stolen
Steve away from them. I can’t blame him for feeling that way, we got a
good one in Steve. Joe (our 4th horn dude) said that Steve looked like
he was having fun playing during the Mahler. Tonight at the Upper St.
Clair Hamlisch Pops concert we were reflecting on the fact that it
must’ve been a lot more fun to play from within the section without the
pressure of playing for the job. Welcome to the section Steve, here’s
to many years of camaraderie in music making…….tink.
This officially bumps me out of the "new guy" category. Now I’m just another crusty member of the horn section………phew.
